Dyatmika Primary School

Dyatmika Primary School Curriculum

The new Indonesian National Curriculum 2006 is followed. This is very similar to primary schools in many western countries as it is outcomes-based, and student and activity oriented. Further, while the curriculum is Indonesian, teaching strategies are heavily influenced by western-style teaching methods.

Primary Level Subjects

Both Bahasa Indonesia and English are taught as first languages at Dyatmika Primary School. ESL (English as a Second Language) and ISL (Indonesian as a Second Language) assistance is also offered to those students who need help in either language. Maths, Science and Social Studies are taught bilingually, with work produced in both languages. Physical Education, Health, Art and Music are taught to all primary school students. Most of the subject areas are integrated into learning topics or themes, allowing students to gain a wider and deeper understanding. Appreciation of Balinese culture is also taught at all levels and students are introduced to the Balinese language and script.

Bi-lingual

The primary school children are truly bilingual. Each class has a full-time Indonesian teacher and a half-time native-English-speaking teacher. Approximately half of all lessons are taught in English and half in Bahasa Indonesia. Most of the time, both class teachers are team teaching and both languages are used. Socially, students use both languages freely and confidently.

Dyatmika School Facilities

Dyatmika has an extensive library, well stocked with fiction, non-fiction and reference books in both English and Bahasa Indonesia. Two computer rooms are available for student use and all students are able to use the Internet for research. Computer skills are taught at every level starting from pre-school. There is one new computer per student for all computer classes. Outdoor facilities include a sports field, an undercover area for sports, as well as a separate primary school playground with a play structure.

Environmental awareness

Awareness of environmental issues is central to the ethos of Dyatmika School. Each class in the primary school studies the environment as part of the curriculum, the school recycles and reuses much of the rubbish produced and annually we hold an 'Environment Day' and take part in the 'Clean up Bali' project.

Extra-curricular activities

A wide range of after-school activities are offered each term. Activities range from arts and crafts and performing arts to a variety of sports and games with a more academic orientation. Each term a variety of activities are offered for each age group.

Community Care and Responsibility

As Dyatmika has grown from a small to medium-size school, it has retained its atmosphere of acceptance and caring, which means students develop confidence and a feeling of belonging. Activities are organised for families and parents are involved in many aspects of the school. Whole-school activities throughout the school year involve students from pre-school to year 12 in multi-age 'house' groupings. These are designed to be fun and build on the warm family atmosphere throughout the school.
